MGFLO (Version 3.5)
- Abstract
- MGFLO is designed for parallel distributed computation of 3-D coupled viscous flow and heat transfer, including thermocapillary surface tension effects. Of specific interest are microgravity fluid problems relevant to NASA for life support fluid processing and storage and manufacturing applications in the Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions. The project involves development of software for flow simulations on the CRAY T3D and CRAY T3E distributed MPP systems as well as fluid flow experiments on fluid films where the Marangoni effect is dominant. The first-generation MGFLO code achieved a sustained 16.5 gigaFLOPS performance level on the 512-node T3D system at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in March 1997 for a representative 3-D coupled Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni benchmark calculation. An improved version of the code achieved 51.66 gigaFLOPS on the 512-node T3E-600 system at Goddard in July 1997 and achieved 115 gigaFLOPS on a 1,280-node T3E-900 system at Silicon Graphics/Cray Research in July 1997. Recently, MGFLO has been applied to scientific applications on a CRAY T3E-1200 at Silicon Graphics, sustaining speed of approximately 140 gigaFLOPS.
