TERRA (Version 1)

Abstract
TERRA is a 3-D spherical finite element mantle dynamics code developed originally by John Baumgardner and later parallelized by Peter Bunge. The conservation equations are expressed in terms of the primitive variables velocity, pressure, and temperature. The compressible formulation currently offers the ability to treat strong radial and lateral rheological variations, deformational heating, mineralogical phase transitions, as well as lithospheric plates. Geophysical problems that can be addressed using TERRA include "deterministic" models of mantle convection, mantle rheology and mantle convection, and modeling chemical heterogeneity and mixing in 3-D mantle convection.
