New HPF Courses
+++++++++++++++

The Computing Services Department of the University of Liverpool has
just finished updating their HPF Courses. These courses have been
funded by JISC New Technologies Initiative and are available for
downloading from URL:

        http://www.liv.ac.uk/HPC/HPFpage.html

The previous incarnation of these courses received good reports - any
feedback on the improved versions is strongly welcomed.

The following text is taken from the above web page:

There are two main Courses lasting 3 or 5 days and a shorter
Seminar. The courses comprise OHP Slides, Course Notes, Student
Exercises and Lecturers Guide. There is also a set of OHPs for a 40
minute seminar explaining the conversion Fortran 77 codes into HPF.

===================================================================

    o The 75 Minute Seminar
"An Overview of HPF" is an introduction to High Performance
Fortran for programmers who are familiar with a high level
language such as C, Pascal or Fortran 77. Most of the major
concepts within HPF are introduced and illustrated with
examples. This course gives a good grounding in what HPF has to
      offer.

    o The Three Day Course
"HPF for Fortran 90 Programmers" is designed to aid Fortran 90
in making the transition to HPF. Most of the major concepts
within HPF are introduced, illustrated with examples and then
reinforced by the use of programming exercises. Each day is
divided into two 3 hour sessions: 1 hour lecture, 2 hours
practical. The course therefore is divided into 6 x 1 hour
sessions: Data Parallelism, Alignment and Distribution, Forall
and Independent Loops, Procedures, Extrinsic Procedures and
Vectorisation and HPF Library and HPF in the Future.

    o The Five Day Course
"HPF for Programmers" is a complete guide to Fortran 90 /
HPF. This course is for programmers who are familiar with a
high level language such as C, Pascal or Fortran 77. The course
begins by introducing all the features of Fortran 90 that are
relevant to HPF; after this most of the major features of HPF
are explained. There are exercises for both sections of the
course. Each day is divided into two 3 hour sessions: 1 hour
lecture, 2 hours practical. The course therefore is divided
into 10 x 1 hour sessions: Overview, Objects and Expressions,
Control Constructs, Arrays, Program Units and Interfaces, Array
Arguments, Intrinsics and Modules, Data Parallelism, Alignment
and Distribution, Forall and Independent Loops, Procedures and
Extrinsics, HPF Library and HPF in the Future.

o The Fortran 77 to Fortran 90 Conversion Seminar
"From Fortran 77 to HPF" is a short seminar highlighting some
of the issues involved with porting old Fortran 77 codes to HPF
systems. The slides explain some simple conversion productions
and give simplistic examples as illustrations. There are no
Student Notes or Lecturers Guide with this package.
