Installation of LAM

Once you have the software transferred, extract the documentation and read the installation manual. You should be able to find it in lam52/doc subdirectory.

A word of warning. The document is in PostScript and it requires that you have an American ``letter'' tray in your printer. I could not print it on Apple Laser Printers with A4 trays. I also had some problems viewing it with ghostview, but finally managed to read this and other LAM documents using pageview (all on a Sun running Solaris 2.3).

The installation itself is quite trivial. There are 12 patches to apply to the source, then configure one of the files and type make. It's all explained in the installation manual which is only 10 pages long.

LAM is available for Sun 4 running SunOS and Solaris, SGI, IBM RS6000, Alphas running OSF/1, and HPs.

If you haven't done any installations before, and if you have a system administrator, ask her to do it for you. I'm sure she'll be delighted to be of assistance. You may have to have a large bar of chocolate ready.
