This revolutionary CD-ROM utilizes multimedia software on a Macintosh platform and has been devised to replace the traditional practice of publishing proceedings on paper. The 1992 DAGS Parallel Computing Symposium proceedings are brought to you in this exciting format through the enterprising efforts of Peter Gloor (Union Bank of Switzerland and Dartmouth College), Fillia Makedon (Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth College) and James W. Matthews (Dartmouth). The purpose of Dartmouth's Institute for Advanced Graduate Studies (DAGS) is to strengthen the interaction between the theoretical and practical communities by acting both as a forum and as a working environment to stimulate new applications of parallel computation. In 1992, the DAGS Symposium addressed "Issues and Obstacles in the Practical Implementation of Parallel Algorithms and the Use of Parallel Machines," with the focus on problems that arise in parallel scientific computing. This CD-ROM brings the invited speakers from that meeting to your desktop, along with proprietary hypertext software that allows viewers to annotate the papers. Eight invited speakers' presentations are displayed in video and sound, with an adjacent window displaying the full-color overheads used by each presenter with their talk. In addition to viewing the presentations on the CD, viewers may stop the video at any time, call up the abstract of the original paper, read it, and even print it. Highlighted segments of the talk and the backgrounds of presenters may also be accessed. The CD-ROM is packaged with a 16-page booklet that describes how to use the disc, including how to maneuver through the talks and how to use the software to annotate the papers. Also included on the CD is a HyperCard(r) presentation that explains how the CD was put together, to give viewers interested in capturing their next conference, workshop, or meeting, valuable insight into what is involved in this procedure.
