Abstract
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We are developing tools that allow data parallel programs to interoperate. Potential applications for this work include developing applications that couple multiple scientific simulations, perhaps running at different sites, and integrating results from multiple sensor databases or from multiple medical databases. U Maryland has already developed a prototype "meta-library" called Meta-Chaos that makes it possible to integrate multiple data parallel programs (written using different parallel programming paradigms) within a single application. Meta-Chaos also supports integrating multiple data parallel libraries within a single program. We will take an active role in the definition and implementation of the Common Adaptive Runtime Environment (CARTE). CARTE is to be created by: (1) using MetaChaos to integrate multiple parallel libraries and programming environments (including KeLP, Pfortran and PC), (2) augmenting those libraries with functionality that was supported by the CHAOS and SDDA libraries and (3) extending the libraries to efficiently support persistent datastructures. Our implementation role will be to adapt the Active Data Repository to provide persistent datastructure support for KeLP, DAGH and ultimately for CARTE. The integrated library will provide support for several NPACI applications thrusts (Molecular Science, Earth Systems Science, Engineering).
