Check out www.beowulf.org for commodity supercomputer information.
You can also check out the beowulf cluster quick-start or the Beouwlf
HOWTO, both linked off of http://www.xtreme-machines.com under
links. These sites are for tips on how to build one.  I think some
history may be present in the HOWTO, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
