There is an opening for a postdoc research associate in my group at
the University of Orl=E9ans' LIFO
http://www.univ-orleans.fr/SCIENCES/LIFO.

The project is called "high level tools for parallel systems" and
deals with "the implementation and application of a very high level
programming system for parallel computing" based on skeletons, BSP
and/or related techniques. Potential users of the software tools are
in our own lab's data mining project, the University's organic
chemistry simulation lab and the biophysics lab's simulation team. The
selected candidate is expected to interact with those users to ensure
that the tools will find practical use on the campus, while improving
on the current state of the art in declarative parallel programming.

LIFO members have ongoing projects on parallel DBMS algorithms,
functional parallel language design, parallelizing numerical solvers,
constraint based parallel language design, parallelized data mining
and parallelized natural language processing. As a result there are
possibilities for exchanging and/or collaborating on all aspects of
parallel programming: algorithms, languages, applications. There are
two Sparc-ultra biprocessors on site and remote access to T3E and
Origin2000 systems. A mid-size parallel system will be installed
on the campus before the end of 1999.

The lab is housed in a 5yr-old building facing Orl=E9ans' Parc Floral.
Orl=E9ans lies 110km south of Paris, has approximately the same
climate, and 1/3 the housing cost. It is a city of 160 000 with its
own national theater and mediatheque (multi-media city library). The
region offers a great variety of cultural and outdoors activities.

Here is the official call for applications. Contact me for further info.

le STUDIUM is an international institution based in the Loire Valley
(Orl=E9ans - France) which supports innovative multidisciplinary
projects through ths sponsorship of postdoctoral associate
positions. Beside conducting their research, the selected candidates
will be offered means of organizing an international workshop in the
field related to the project.

Two positions are available for the following projects:

1. High-level tools for parallel systems
The candidate requested should hold a doctorate in Computer Science
with a solid mathematical background and good programming
skills. Research experience in at least one of the following areas is
required: parallel programming languages and libraries; declarative
programming: functional-, logic-, constraint-based methods; compilers
and run-time systems for parallel computers. Practical knowledge of
any of the following would be an asset: MPI, BSP-Lib, Java, Caml,
Haskell, Prolog. The selected candidate will have to interact
effectively with non-specialist application programmers and Computer
Science researchers alike.

2. Structure of ionic fluids in contact with charged interfaces
[other project's description]

The positions are for one year with a possible extension to two
years. The closing date for applications is May 1st, 1999. The
starting dates will be decided in agreement with the selected
candidates, but should not be later than October 1999. The positions
are not open to French citizens. Candidates should send their CV and
list of publications together with the names and addresses of three
referees to :
