EXTENDED ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 25, 1999
****************************************************************

                               CALL FOR PAPERS

                             Special Session on

                             Quality of Service
                  in High-Performance Distributed Systems

                            in conjunction with
       the 1999 International Conference on Parallel and Distributed
            Processing Technologies and Applications (PDPTA '99)
                   ( http://jhpc.org/pdpta/pdpta99.htm )
                 Las Vegas, Nevada, June 28 - July 1, 1999.

ABOUT THE SESSION:

Distributed computing systems are emerging as cost-effective platforms for
high-performance computing. These systems are characterized by the presence
of independent computing activities or tasks, highly dynamic and
unpredictable networked environments, and heterogeneous computing resources
whose performance may span a range of several orders of magnitude. To
execute mission-critical applications in such distributed systems, it is
necessary to provide end-to-end performance guarantees to the applications.
Managing the quality-of-service (QoS) has been recognized as the key for
delivering assured end-to-end performance for the applications.

This session is concerned with the QoS management technologies that are
relevant to distributed systems. The topics of interest include but are not
limited to the following:

   * taxonomies for QoS metrics, models, and specifications
   * QoS resource allocation, renegotiation, and maintenance
   * instrumentation for monitoring QoS
   * adaptive QoS-driven resource management for distributed systems
   * middleware and operating system support for QoS
   * QoS and adaptive distributed systems
   * QoS and real-time distributed systems
   * mapping application-level QoS constraints onto middleware
   * resource management systems
   * distributed computing applications and QoS requirements
   * distributed objects, distributed shared memory and QoS
   * metacomputing systems with QoS support
   * QoS programmability and languages
   * experimental studies on QoS

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Authors are invited to submit extended summaries of original unpublished
research in topics related to this session. If a significant subset of the
work has been published previously or is presently under consideration for
publication elsewhere, the cover note should clearly indicate this detail
along with a key list of differences. As long as there are significant
differences the paper may appear in the proceedings when accepted. All
submissions will be reviewed.

The extended summaries should not exceed four (4) single-spaced pages of
text using 12 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inch pages. References, figures,
tables, etc. may be included in addition to the four pages of text. For
electronic submissions, the authors should submit a Postscript file that can
be viewed using the Ghostscript or Ghostview and can be printed on a
Postscript printer that uses 8.5 x 11 inch (letter size) paper. All hardcopy
submissions should be sent to the session contact at the address given
below. All manuscripts should be received by March 15, 1999.

All accepted papers should be presented by one of the authors at PDPTA '99
during the special session. The accepted papers will be published in the
PDPTA '99 conference proceedings. Some papers from the special session will
be selected for publication in a special issue of an appropriate journal.

See http://www.cs.umanitoba.ca/~maheswar/pdpta_qos for the latest
information concerning the special session and
http://jhpc.org/pdpta/pdpta99.htm for the latest information on PDPTA '99.

Authors who would like to submit papers for consideration in other sessions
of the PDPTA '99 conference should mail their papers to the PDPTA's General
Chair. Please see the http://jhpc.org/pdpta/pdpta99.htm website for more
details.
