FACULTY POSITION IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

The University of Southern Mississippi
Hattiesburg Campus

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a tenure-track
position at the rank of assistant professor in the Department of Computer 

Science and Statistics.  Qualifications for the position include an 
earned 
doctorate in computer science by the Fall of 1999 and the abilities to 
teach 
both undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct scholarly research, and 
obtain external funding.  Areas of primary interest are graphics, 
networking, 
and parallel computing, however, all well-qualified candidates will be 
considered.

This department, one of the first in the nation to offer a B.S. degree in 

Computer Science, currently has approximately 300 undergraduate majors 
and 20 
master's degree candidates in our M.S. degrees in computer science and 
computational science.  The department is an integral part of an 
interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in scientific computing (30 students) 
that is 
offered in conjunction with the Department of Physics/Astronomy and 
Mathematics.

Current areas of research in the department include software design, 
neural 
networks, AI, parallel processing, human factors, database design, 
cryptography, numerical ocean modeling, spatial data modeling, robotics, 
fuzzy logic, etc.

USM is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, which was recently recognized 
as 
one of the 10 best small cities in the United States.  Hattiesburg is 
located 
75 miles from the Stennis Space Center, one of the Department of 
Defense's 
four major shared resource centers for advanced, high-performance 
computing.
