We're looking for recommendations of a software/hardware combination
for matlab-like work on a parallel machine.

We have matlab running on an 8-cpu Onyx, where it is automatically
parallelized by the SGI OS. Needless to say, there isn't much
speed-up, since matlab is mostly single-threaded and Onyx parallelism
isn't well enough synced for most matrix operations.

We are considering buying special hardware, e.g., a Beowulf or a
multi-CPU box. However, we need a matlab-like package that can
properly exploit it at the fine-grained (matrix) and/or coarse-grained
(thread) levels. Has anyone had good experiences with some
combination? Since we are a research lab, our priorities are to avoid
time-sinks like programming or software/hardware maintenance.

Please send email; I'll summarize and post.
