This successful series of workshops started with the Austrian-Hungarian Workshops on Transputer Applications held in Sopron (1992) and in Budapest (1994). Based on these traditions but widening the scope of the workshop we decided to organise the next workshop under a new name reflecting the wider scope and with a subtitle that will change from workshop to workshop and will focus to some special topics. DAPSYS'96 held in Miskolc had the subtitle: Environments and Tools. The current workshop will focus on the educational aspects of parallel and distributed processing as well as the programming tools provided for parallel and distributed programming. Some special sessions will be organised in these focused areas: Tempus sessions and a Winpar ESPRIT session. ERCIM is a network of prestigious research institutes of Europe working also in the field of distributed and parallel processing. In order to introduce the work of these institutes we organise an ERCIM session as well. SCOPE DAPSYS'98 is expected to be a major event for researchers and teachers to consider present and future topics in distributed and parallel systems. Papers presenting educational methods, original research, new concepts and results of international projects are being sought. Papers describing teaching experiments and programming tools for distributed and parallel systems are especially welcome. Typical, but not exclusive, topics include: distributed operating systems parallel architectures parallel/distributed languages computational models parallel/distributed algorithms parallelization multithreaded programming parallel/distributed databases testing and debugging performance analysis parallel/distributed I/O load balancing Web computing Java INVITED SPEAKERS L.O. Hertzberger (Univ. of Amsterdam) B. Chapman (European Centre for Parallel Computing at Vienna) T. Roska (MTA SZTAKI, Budapest) SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Contributors are invited to submit a full paper not exceeding 10 double-spaced pages in English to the program committee chair at Dr. Gabriele Kotsis, Univ. of Vienna dapsys98@ani.univie.ac.at The title page should contain a 100-word abstract and five specific keywords. DAPSYS accepts submission only by electronic mail. A selection of best papers will nominated for a follow-up publication in a special issue of the FGCS Journal. Selected papers of the previous workshop, DAPSYS'96, have been published in a special issue (February 1997) of Parallel Computing.
