  Special issue of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering


  Architecture-Independent Languages and Software Tools
                   for Parallel Processing



Design and adoption of architecture independent programming 
languages and tools are necessary for general-purpose parallel 
processing. This approach allows development of portable and 
standardized parallel software on different parallel architectures,
from SIMD machines to distributed-memory MIMD computers. The goal of
this special issue is to address theoretical and practical issues in
architecture-independent programming models, languages, and tools
for parallel processing, present software engineering techniques in
parallel programming, and report experiences in real-life 
applications using either new high-level languages or 
architecture-independent software environments. Further, 
this theme issue aims to improve the knowledge of the user
community about parallel software development tools and 
provide innovative ideas on practical high-level
programming of high-performance computers. Areas of interest
include, but are not limited to:

    o Architecture-independent programming models for parallel
      processing;
    o Comparison of languages and tools for parallel software con-
      struction;
    o High-level software paradigms for parallel processing;
    o Applications of architecture-independent parallel software tools;
    o Environments and tools for management of parallel software;
    o New high-performance environments and programming tools;
    o Practical ideas and software engineering techniques in par-
      allel programming;
    o Case Studies - success as well as failure stories.

Papers should report innovative ideas and practical results in real-
life applications; they should include evaluations through analy-
sis, simulation and experiments possibly on different parallel plat-
forms. Please submit six copies of your manuscript to one of the
guest editors by May 30, 1998:
