"Supercomputing Techniques: Parallel Processing on CRAY MPP Systems"
	by Stephanie Dobler <dobler@psc.edu>
Details of workshop being held from 29th September-2nd October 1997
at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Organised by Pittsburgh
	Supercomputing Center.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this three and a half day workshop is to
introduce participants to parallel processing on the CRAY T3E
and explore more advanced topics, including performance
	monitoring and optimization techniques.

AGENDA: The first two days of this workshop have been designed to
introduce participants to PSC's supercomputing environment,
compiling, debugging, job submission, and parallel
programming concepts. Participants will learn to write
parallel code using message passing calls.

The third and fourth days are designed to cover more advanced topics,
including advanced parallel programming techniques, how to
monitor code performance and optimization strategies. There
will also be presentations on scientific applications which
	have been parallelized.

To ensure that participants receive quality training, our workshops
incorporate both lectures and extensive hands-on lab
sessions. Programming exercises are carefully esigned to
reinforce concepts and techniques taught in class. Our
instructors have strong scientific and technical backgrounds
and are available for individual consultation during lab
	sessions.

In addition to the lab exercises, lab time will also be available for
participants to optimize their own code with the help and
supervision of our instructors. Participants are encouraged
to bring their code, but not required.

NOTE: A working knowledge of FORTRAN or C and UNIX is required.
Parallel computing experience is not necessary.

Topics: parallel processing on the CRAY T3E, performance monitoring
	and optimization techniques.

	Deadlines: Registration: September 15, 1997.

Call for papers for conference being held at Manchester
Conference Centre, UK from 12th-14th January 1998. Organised
by EPSRC, Universities of Edinburgh & Southampton and CCLRC
	Daresbury Laboratory.

The end of this year will mark three years of the U.K. HPC
Initiative, and more importantly three years of exploitation
of the National Cray T3D supercomputer at EPCC. To mark this
event a conference will be held in Manchester in mid January
1998. The focus of this conference is scientific achievement,
	not politics!

As the procurement process for the next stage in the
development of HPC is now under way, it will be timely to
assess the progress achieved and to indicate our expectations
for the next three years. We also hope to invite plenary
speakers from the major US and European supercomputer sites
to act as a cross-border comparison. We will also involve the
major supercomputer vendors and software specialists.

We are hoping for contributions from all HPCI Consortia and
others involved in high-performance computing in the UK (see
call for papers). Proceedings will be formally published in a
book by Plenum shortly after the conference. It is hoped that
this book will stand as testimony to the enabling power and
cost-effectiveness of parallel supercomputers in modelling
the world in which we live.

Topics: High-performance Computing in Academic Research Grand
	Challenges..

Deadlines: none set - use on-line registration form.
