Beowulf is a class of PC based distributed computing systems employing the Linux operating system and industry standard message passing programming libraries. It is a NASA sponsored research program and has been a pathfinder project in applying mass market technologies to scientific and engineering applications. This month's talk/workshop by Dr. Tom Sterling of CalTech will present findings from experiences with Beowulf as they apply to near term directions in mid-level system development. Sources and methodologies proven to be successful will be described and examples of operational application benchmarking will be given. Notes entitled "How to Build a Beowulf" will be distributed. And ... this will be a valuable opportunity to learn the ins and outs of installing, configuring and using the Linux OS. The main meeting starts promptly at 7:30PM at Sun Microsystems at 901 San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. This is just off the southbound San Antonio exit of 101. Northbound travelers also exit at San Antonio and take the overpass to the other side of 101. A discussion of member projects currently underway and other issues of interest to entrepreneurs follows immediately thereafter at 9:15PM.
