[IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW ARE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF AN
ACADEMIC CAREER OR ARE CONSIDERING SUCH CAREER PATH, PLEASE READ
OR FORWARD THIS EMAIL; IF NOT, SORRY FOR THE DISTURBANCE]

Rather than rely on the traditional "trial by fire" approach to
training the next generation of computer science and engineering faculty,
the Computing Research Association (CRA) is sponsoring two workshops,
one on academic careers and another on teaching, to offer advice and
lessons many of us learned the hard way.

By holding the workshops right after the International Symposium on
Computer Architecture (ISCA97), we've been able to get
department chairs and college deans to volunteer to give
the kind of career advice we all wish we'd had at the beginning of
our careers. Speakers will cover the Tenure Process;
Selecting and Managing a Research Project; Getting Funding;
Networking with other researchers; and Time Management/Family Issues.
Speakers include yours truly (Berkeley), Jan Cuny (Oregon),
Susan Eggers (Washington), John Hennessy (Stanford),
Mary Jane Irwin (Penn State), and Robert Schnabel (Colorado).

The teaching workshop will help new faculty members teach more
effectively. This highly interactive workshop includes theoretical
material on learning styles and instructional objectives, and
practical tips on effective lecturing, creative problem-solving
and collaborative learning. It is lead by Michael R. Williams
(Calgary), who has won several teaching awards.

The workshops will be held June 4-6, 1997 in Denver at the Oxford Hotel
immediately following ISCA97. For CRA members the cost for both workshops
is $250 for faculty and $170 for students, provided they register by May 23.
A single workshop costs $125 to $150 for faculty and $90 to $115 for students.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, check out "What's New" at http://www.cra.org or
send email to info@cra.org or call CRA at 202-234-2111 8AM-5PM EDT Mon-Fri.
