DEC's Alpha 21164 - An Attractive Alternative to x'86

Intel's highly restrictive licensing policies vis-a-vis their P6 and =
Klamath busses seem to signal that company's determination to own =
multiprocessing on the desktop. Thus, entrepreneurs seeking to =
participate in the coming move to desktop multiprocessing are looking =
to DEC's Alpha 21164 CPU as an attractive alternative.

PPC's May speaker is Y. J. Kim, a senior manager at Samsung =
Semiconductor. He co-authored an excellent article in the April 1997 =
OEM Magazine (page 39) which clearly indicated the Alpha 21164's =
technical superiority over Intel's offering in raw clock speed (500 =
MHz), MPEG-1 encoding used in videoconferencing, high performance =
floating point operations needed for 3D graphics, etc. And Samsung =
's recently acquired license to manufacture the Alpha is expected to =
dramatically lower the price of Alpha systems.

Y.J.'s description of Alpha's architecture will emphasize its =
multi-processing capabilities. PPC will want to know if Samsung =
plans to manufacture systems and supporting chips and what important =
collaborative opportunities may be available.

The main meeting starts promptly at 7:30PM at Sun Microsystems at 901 =
San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. This is just off the southbound San =
Antonio exit of 101. Northbound travelers also exit at San=A0Antonio =
and take the overpass to the other side of 101. A discussion of =
member projects currently underway and other issues of interest to =
entrepreneurs follows immediately thereafter at 9:15PM. Please be =
prompt; as usual, we expect a large attendance; don't be left out or =
left standing. There is a $12 fee for non-members and members will =
be admitted free. Yearly membership fee is $65.
