April 8th - The Scalable Coherent Interface - An Update

Three years ago we presented a tutorial on Distributed Shared Memory
using the Scalable Coherent Interface. We foresaw SCI being the
gateway to nonPproprietary, commodity priced parallel processing
because of its status as a public IEEE/ANSI spec. And we saw some
very solid entrepreneurial opportunities.  All of this has come to pass;
virtually every large company has either announced an SCI based
system or is known to be studying the technology - Sun, Cray,
HP/Convex, Sequent, IBM, Data General, Intel, Ollivetti, Fujitsu,
Unisys, Apple, etc.

Mitchell Loebel and J. R. Bertram of MultiNode Microsystems Company
are currently involved in developing an implementation of SCI to
cluster PC's. They will present a summary of the protocol, an
insightful report on the business situations they are tracking, and they
will discuss opportunities for additional PPC member participation.
These two PPC members will also talk about a derivative of SCI known
as Serial Express.

The main meeting starts promptly at 7:30PM at Sun Microsystems at
901 San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. This is just off the southbound
San Antonio exit of 101. Northbound travelers also exit at San Antonio
and take the overpass to the other side of 101. A discussion of member
projects currently underway and other issues of interest to entrepreneurs
follows immediately thereafter at 9PM.

Please be prompt; as usual, we expect a large attendance; don't be left
out or left standing. There is a $10 fee for non-members and members
will be admitted free. Yearly membership fee is $50.
