Over the past several years as we explored many technologies, we
noticed a number of "religions": SIMD vs. MIMD, "open" vs. "proprietary"
configurations, shared memory vs. explicit message passing, etc. On
September 12th we will begin a series intended to explore these and
other dichotomies; the "shake-out" has begun. J.P. Singh, has worked
under Stanford's John Hennessey on the DASH project, is extensively
published, and was co-author of an excellent article in the July '94
Computer magazine. Therein, he made a case for shared memory with
references to three dominant graphics applications. He sees shared
memory as enhancing programmability, performance and, in some cases,
even scalability. PPC is currently exploring how our people might
connect with high performance computing work being done at Stanford;
this talk will provide important and relevant insights for us.

A discussion of member entrepreneurial projects currently underway
will begin at 7:15PM and the main meeting will start promptly at
7:45PM at Sun Microsystems at 901 San Antonio Road in Palo
Alto. This is just off the southbound San Antonio exit of 101.
Northbound travelers also exit at San Antonio and take the overpass
to the other side of 101.

Please be prompt; as usual, we expect a large attendance; donUt be
left out or left standing. There is a $10 fee for non-members and
members will be admitted free.  Yearly membership fee is $50;
corporate membership fee is $400/year.
