Institute, Cray Research, Inc., and Cray Superserver Research, Inc.) is
pleased to invite you to attend the Cray User Group Conference in San Diego,
California, March 14-18, 1994. The theme of this year9s conference is
Unparalleled Horizons.

expect a rewarding experience personally as well as professionally.

You will receive the final local arrangements brochure with details of
the technical programs in January. If you have any questions, please
contact us. We9ll see you in March.

SPONSORED BY THE SAN DIEGO SUPERCOMPUTER CENTER
A National Laboratory for Computational Science and Engineering

To the members of CUG:

It is my pleasure to cordially invite you to attend the 33rd Cray User
Group meeting in San Diego, California, March 14-18, 1994. This years
theme "Unparalleled Horizons" will challenge us all as we look ahead to
unequaled progress in high-performance computing technology.

Calls for Papers and Posters for the Conference are included at the back
of this brochure. The deadline for abstracts and poster descriptions is
December 10, 1993. Papers are presented in 30-minute time slots as a part
of a topical formal session. The poster session is an opportunity to
present your work in an informal, unstructured setting using a visual
representation (a poster) rather than a paper. There will be an award
for the best poster presentation.

The Program Committee is planning a stimulating agenda. In addition to
the successful Monday morning tutorials, the first day of the Conference
will include a "What is CUG" discussion and an Advisory Council meeting.
Tuesday morning, Astronaut Sally Ride will be Keynote Speaker. General
sessions and special interest tracks will be held each day. The Conference
concludes Friday at noon.

Birds-Of-a-Feather (BOF) sessions will be scheduled to bring together
those people interested in discussing specific issues. If you wish to
organize a BOF at the Conference, please contact me. A room for BOFs
will be available.

We welcome you and hope to see you in San Diego.

may be directed to the office at 1-619-274-7141. Messages will be posted
near the registration area.

E-MAIL AND PERSONAL COMPUTERS

VT100 compatible terminals will be available to allow participants to send
and receive e-mail and use the Internet. A Macintosh with Persuasion,
MS Word, MS Excel, and MacDraw II and a printer will be available.

COPYING

A copy machine will be available for making limited copies. If you have
handouts or documentation to distribute at the conference, please bring a
sufficient number of copies with you.

DINING SERVICES

Refreshment will be available during breaks throughout the conference.
Breakfast will be served Tuesday through Friday, and lunch Tuesday through
Thursday. Food and drinks will be served at each of the social events.
Special dietary requirements should be specified on the conference
registration form. There are restaurants and bars located on the hotel
grounds. If you are interested in sampling some of San Diego's excellent
Mexican and Californian cuisine, ask the Concierge for recommendations.

SPECIAL NEEDS

The Princess Hotel is in compliance with the American Disabilities Act
(ADA). If you have any special needs, please indicate them on the
conference registration form.

** HOTEL INFORMATION **

The conference hotel is the San Diego Princess Hotel and Conference Center,
located in the center of San Diego on a forty-four acre island in Mission
Bay. The accommodations consist of bungalows nestled among beautiful lagoons
and lush tropical landscaping. A block of rooms at a special conference
rate has been reserved (including a limited number at a government rate).
The conference room rates are only available for reservations made before
February 10, 1994. We recommend that you stay at the Princess, as there are
no other hotels within walking distance. If the room block is filled, the
hotel will attempt to locate you at another nearby hotel. Room rates at
other hotels cannot be guaranteed. Given the likelihood that attendance
at the conference will be large, we recommend you reserve your room as
soon as possible. For your convenience, use the Hotel Registration form
at the end of this brochure.

** TRANSPORTATION **

San Diego is a large city, and public transportation is not very practical
to get around the area. If you plan to explore San Diego or sightsee
during your stay, we recommend you rent a car.

The San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field) is within 10 minutes
drive of the Princess Hotel.

SUPERSHUTTLE OR TAXI

If you do not rent a car at the airport, we recommend you use SuperShuttle
to get to the Princess Hotel from the airport. The Shuttle cost is $6.00
each way. To arrange for the shuttle:

Find the hotel courtesy phoneboard located in the baggage claim area.
Press #69 and the operator will direct you to the nearby SuperShuttle
loading area. Or call 278-5700 from any public telephone.

When returning to the airport, make advance reservations for SuperShuttle.
Ask the Concierge or front desk to book your return reservation, or call
278-8877 to make a reservation yourself.

Taxis are available immediately outside the baggage claim area at the
airport. The taxi fare to the Princess is about $10.00.

DIRECTIONS

FROM AIRPORT

If you are driving from the airport, take Harbor Drive South (towards
downtown San Diego) to Grape Street. At the light turn left. Follow the
signs to Interstate 5 North. Take Interstate 5 North to Sea World Drive.
At the top of the offramp at the light, turn left and go over the bridge
onto Sea World Drive. Follow Sea World Drive to West Mission Bay
Drive/Ingraham Street. Veer to the right. Stay on Ingraham until you
reach West Vacation Road, where you will see the sign for the San Diego
Princess Hotel. Turn left into the hotel grounds.

FROM LOS ANGELES

If you are driving from the Los Angeles area, take Interstate 5 South to
Sea World Drive. At the top of the offramp at the light turn right.
Follow Sea World Drive to West Mission Bay Drive/Ingraham Street. Veer to
the right. Stay on Ingraham until you reach West Vacation Road, where you
will see the sign for the San Diego Princess Hotel. Turn left into the
hotel grounds.

TRAVEL TO MEXICO

Persons with U.S. citizenship may freely visit nearby Mexico (17 miles
from downtown) with only normal identification.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, you9ll need to carry your passport and
have a multiple entry visa for the U.S. to visit Mexico. If you leave
the U.S. with a single entry visa, you will not be able to return to the
U.S. from Mexico; this is considered a second entry.

** SOCIAL EVENTS **

CRI RECEPTION

All participants and guests are invited to a Monday evening reception
sponsored by CRI. Newcomer9s Reception

All new CUG member sites and first-time CUG attendees are invited to a
reception Tuesday evening on the Governor9s Lawn.

NIGHT-OUT

The traditional CUG Night Out on Wednesday (6:00 until 10:15) is a cruise
on San Diego Bay with dinner, music, and spectacular views of San Diego's
downtown skyline and Coronado Bridge. The Night Out is included with
registration, but additional tickets for guests must be purchased separately.
Register and purchase any additional tickets as early as possible to
guarantee space for guests.

GUEST PROGRAMS, TOURS, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

If you plan to extend your stay and vacation in San Diego, the Princess
Hotel offers many activities, including

  Botanical walks around the island
  18-hole golf course
  Fitness Center
  Jogging and par course
  Bicycles and Quadracycles
  Tennis courts
  Swimming pools and whirlpools
  Shuffleboard
  Croquet course
Wind surfing, sailing, and power and paddle boats

Some of these activities are free, and others are provided at an additional
cost. Ask the Concierge for information about their fitness programs and
recreation pass.

The Princess Hotel Concierge staff is also available to assist you with
dinner reservations, directions, and tours. Discounted tickets for the San
Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and Sea World can be purchased from the
Concierge Desk on the day you visit each attraction. The staff can also
arrange fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, or golf at one of several
championship courses located within 30 minutes of the hotel.

Shopping opportunities in the area include Seaport Village on San Diego
Bay, Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego, and Old Town. You will need
transportation to and from these areas, so plan to rent a car or hire a
taxi.

CLIMATE/CLOTHING

San Diego has mild temperatures all year round. You rarely need a topcoat
or raincoat. Evenings can be cool, so bring a sweater or jacket. The
temperatures in March can be warm, so shorts and swimwear may be
desirable. Average temperatures range from 50-66 F (or 10-19 C).

Most San Diego restaurants welcome casual attire.
