Paul Walker, trading as "4Links for technical help" Provides consultancy and helps clients to: * Solve technical problems (no fix, no fee) * Understand colleagues' and customers' problems * Design products that delight * Create product and business opportunities Areas covered include the hardware of computers, communications and electronics, and particularly of transputer links and modular design. When at INMOS, Paul originated the TRAM standard for transputer modules and did much of the ground-work for HTRAMs and for the DS-Link standards included in IEEE P1355. As a consultant, Paul was contracted to study 100 metre links through standard LAN cabling, which is being proposed as P1355.1. He has helped a number of transputer users and others to sort out problems, to collect technical information, to understand just what their customers are asking for, and to forecast technology trends. Speculatively, Paul has developed an architecture for a cost-effective interface between virtual channels (such as ATM or DS-Links) and computer buses such as ISA or PCI. Publications include "Payloads and Overheads" in IEE Review, drawing analogies between Communications and the Just-In-Time characteristics of the modern factory. Independent of transputers and communications, Paul is Deputy Chair of the IEE's Professional Group for "Design and Development".
